Grinnell baseball team halts losing streak with explosive performance

GRINNELL, Iowa - Mired in a five-game losing streak, the Grinnell College baseball team needed to bounce back with a statement win.

Mission accomplished.

Jonathan Gottlieb '22 belted a grand slam homer in the third inning and Grinnell broke away from a 6-all tie with a 10-run outburst in the seventh inning to sail past Cornell College 16-6 Tuesday at Pioneer Park.

Ian Brown '25 fittingly ended the game in walkoff style with a three-run blast over the left-field fence in the bottom of the seventh.

Brown and Ethan Crawford '25 each had two hits in the Pioneers' 10-hit attack. Danny Pocklington '23 tossed one-hit ball over the final 1-1/3 innings to earn the pitching win for Grinnell (5-16, 3-9 Midwest Conference).

Sean Tashjian '25 hit an RBI triple to right field to open the scoring in the first inning, but the Ram rallied with solo runs in the second and third frames for a 2-1 lead.

That's when Gottlieb got hold of a pitch with the bases loaded and sent it over the left-field fence for a 5-2 lead. Grinnell went up 6-2 in the fourth on Ethan Crawford's solo homer.

However, Cornell (9-15, 4-5 MWC) scratched back with four runs in the sixth to tie the game. But Grinnell wasn't fazed and responded with its big output in the seventh.

Brown not only ended the onslaught in the final inning, but also started it with an RBI single. Gottlieb walked with the bases loaded, Matthew Inaba '22 hit a two-run double and Josh Fournier '24 added an RBI single to make it 11-6.

After Crawford grounded out to push across a run, Sean Richardson '24 followed with an RBI single to set up Brown's game-winning homer. Richardson had three stolen bases on the game, fourth-best at Grinnell, and his three walks ranks sixth.

Cornell jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opener on its way to an 8-4 victory. The Pioneers were haunted by five errors in the game, as only two of six runs issued by starting pitcher Simon Lane '23 were earned. He fanned seven batters in 4-2/3 innings.

Will Richman '22 led Grinnell's offense with two hits. The Pioneers scored three runs in the fifth inning on RBI singles by Inaba and Ben Kelly '25 and sacrifice fly from Mac McCain '25.

Gottlieb's RBI groundout in the sixth brought Grinnell within 6-4, but the Rams got some security with a two-run seventh.

The Pioneers entertain Monmouth College this weekend, playing one game Friday and two Saturday.
