Brown repeats walkoff heroics as Grinnell ties school record for runs in 22-11 win

GRINNELL, Iowa - Borrowing from the immortal Yogi Berra, it was deja vu all over again for the Grinnell College baseball team Friday afternoon.

For the second time in three days, Ian Brown '24 belted a walkoff homer to lead Grinnell to a mercy rule victory at Pioneer Park.

Friday's victim was Monmouth College, which saw the Pioneers rally from an 11-4 deficit to tie a school record for runs in a game with a 22-11 Midwest Conference victory.

The marathon game lasted 4 hours, 17 seconds and saw 424 pitches thrown - including 227 by Monmouth pitchers - as well as 32 hits and 20 bases on balls.

Grinnell bashed out 22 hits, tied for second-best in program history. The team's RBI total of 18 ranks fifth and six doubles and 34 total bases each are sixth. Grinnell's at-bat total of 48 is eighth-best.

Sean Richardson '24 was 4-of-6 at the plate, while Brown, Jonathan Gottlieb '22, Ethan Crawford '25 and Michael Flaherty '24 added three hits each. Will Richman's '22 seven at-bats rank eighth in program history, while Crawford and Matthew Inaba '22 each scored four runs to rank eighth.

After Monmouth went ahead 7-0 through two innings, Grinnell (6-16, 4-9 MWC) responded with four runs in the second. Gottlieb and Crawford each had RBI singles in the frame.

Monmouth (7-15, 1-8 MWC) tacked on four runs in the third for an 11-4 cushion. Grinnell wasn't done, though. Shiva Bucklin '22 had an RBI groundout in the fourth, Mac McCain '25 pushed across a run in the fifth and Gottlieb scored on a wild pitch in the sixth followed by Flaherty's three-run homer.

Grinnell took the lead for good with a six-run seventh inning. Gottlieb, Flaherty and Richman each hit RBI doubles and Inaba, Crawford and Richardson added run-scoring singles to make it 16-11.

The Pioneers finished things off in the eighth. One run came across on a balk, Richman doubled two more runners in and Brown smashed a three-run homer over the left-center field fence to end the game via the 10-run rule.

Evan Borberg '24, the final of six Grinnell pitchers, collected the win.

The teams play a doubleheader Saturday at Pioneer Park, beginning at noon.
