GC softball team rallies to extinguish 42-game losing streak to Coe

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Grinnell College's softball team may have entered Tuesday's doubleheader with a 42-game losing streak against Coe College, but the Pioneers didn't leave Cedar Rapids that way.

Grinnell rallied from a two-run deficit to topple Coe College for the first time since 1980, posting a 3-2 victory in the opening game. Coe, a team that opened the season receiving votes for the national rankings, came back for a 5-1 win in the nightcap.

Kathryn Vermeulen '24 was dazzling as the Pioneers' pitcher in the opener, firing a complete-game four-hitter and striking out two. Samantha Chu '24 paced the offense with two hits.

Coe scored twice in the second inning, but Grinnell got a run back in the fourth on Emma Nelson's '23 RBI single.

Chu and Lizzy Vermeulen '24 contributed RBI singles in the fifth. Amanda Ramirez '23 reached on an error with one out and went to second on a wild pitch before Alexa Okada '24 reached base on an error. Chu then hit an RBI single to score Ramirez and Okada came across on Vermeulen's single. Grinnell shut the Kohawks down from there to secure the victory.

In the second game, Coe (14-8) took a 1-0 lead before Chu scored on an error in the fourth to tie it. Things remained 1-1 until the Kohawks struck for four runs in the sixth.

Lane Kohler '25 had a solid starting pitching effort for Grinnell (9-12), giving up five hits and striking out two in five innings.

The Pioneers jump back into Midwest Conference action this weekend, playing two games at Lake Forest College on Friday and two against Beloit College Saturday.
