Grinnell baseball team's offensive surge continues in sweep of Fighting Scots

GRINNELL, Iowa - The heavy-hitting Grinnell College baseball team continued its offensive onslaught Saturday while sweeping Monmouth College with two wins at Pioneer Park.

The Pioneers, who stretched their winning streak to four games, have scored 67 runs in those contests while pounding out 65 hits. On Saturday, a 16-hit attack sparked a 20-9, seven-inning victory over the Fighting Scots followed by a 17-hit output in a 9-3 win.

Flawless defense also helped Grinnell (7-16, 5-9 Midwest Conference) in the second game, as the Pioneers not only made no errors but also some flashy plays in the field. Jake Hull '24 fired four innings of two-hit relief in getting the pitching win and Bradley Carlton '25 and Evan Borberg '24 combined for two innings after that while allowing just one hit.

Grinnell's offensive parade included six doubles, sixth-most in program history. Ian Brown '24 was 4-for-4 and Matthew Inaba '22 was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles.

Monmouth (7-16, 1-9 MWC) grabbed a 2-0 lead, but the Pioneers stormed back with six runs in the fifth inning. Michael Flaherty '24 belted a two-run homer, Brown had an RBI double, Inaba knocked in a run with a single, Jonathan Gottlieb '22 hit a sacrifice fly and Sean Richardson '24 scored on an error.

The Pioneers got two more runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Brown and Gottlieb, while Brown added a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Mac McCain '25 tied a school record with two sacrifice flies in the first game, while Richardson's three stolen bases rank fourth. As a team, Grinnell's five homers rank second in school history, 18 RBIs fifth, run total eighth and seven stolen bases ninth.

Richardson and Gottlieb each had three hits and Garrett Nasif '24 earned the pitching win as he worked 5-1/3 innings.

Monmouth built a 4-1 lead through its first two at-bats, with Grinnell's run coming on McCain's solo homer in the bottom of the first. In the bottom of the second, Grinnell went ahead to stay with a seven-run outburst. Will Richman '22 had a three-run homer in the frame and Luke Porter '23 added a two-run shot.

Grinnell scored four runs in the fifth inning, with Gottlieb's solo homer serving as the highlight. The Pioneers all but put the game out of reach in the sixth with eight runs. Brown continued his power display with a three-run homer and Richardson added a two-run single.

Grinnell has another doubleheader next Saturday when Illinois College visits Pioneer Park.
