Pitching, defense spark Grinnell baseball victory over Illinois College

GRINNELL, Iowa - After relying on explosive offense in recent victories, Grinnell College's baseball team showed its pitching and defensive muscle in a 4-2 win over Illinois College Saturday at Pioneer Park.

Three Grinnell pitchers combined on an eight-hitter and the defense played errorless ball as the hosts extended their winning streak to five games. The win was key to the Pioneers' postseason hopes as they improved to 7-9 in the Midwest Conference and 9-16 overall. Illinois College dropped to 6-9 in the league and 11-19 in all games.

Grinnell starting pitcher Ian Feld '25 earned the win, scattering five hits and fanning eight over seven innings. Jake Hull '24 added an inning of hitless relief and Evan Borberg '24 entered the game in the ninth to earn the save.

The Pioneers' 11-hit attack was led by Mac McCain '25 and Will Richman '22, who each had two hits. Richman also helped preserve the win with a superb catch of a deep fly ball to left field with two runners on and two out in the bottom of the ninth.

Richman had an RBI double to center field in the first and Luke Porter '23 added a run-scoring single to right. Ethan Crawford '25 added a solo homer in the second to put the Pioneers ahead 3-0.

After Illinois College scored in the third, the Pioneers got a run back when Matthew Inaba '22 scored on a wild pitch. The Blueboys finished the scoring with a run in the ninth.

The teams meet again Sunday in a doubleheader, beginning at 11 a.m.
