Grinnell baseball team walks off yet another victory

GRINNELL, Iowa - After Ian Brown '24 hit a few walk off homers last week, Grinnell College teammate Will Richman '22 got into the act Sunday.

Richman's grand slam homer in the bottom of the seventh inning concluded a 13-2 mercy-rule victory over Illinois College at Pioneer Park. That gave Grinnell its sixth victory in a row.

Grinnell's 15-hit attack featured a 4-for-5 plate performance by Mac McCain '25, while Brown added three hits. On the flip side, Garrett Nasif '24 fired an eight-hit complete game and struck out seven.

Brown belted a three-run homer in the third inning to give the Pioneers the lead for good. After Illinois College scored twice in the fourth frame, the Pioneers put up three runs in the fifth as Richman hit a sacrifice fly to right and Brown added an RBI single before later scoring on an error.

Luke Porter '23 hit a two-run single to left in the sixth and Jonathan Gottlieb '22 contributed an RBI infield single to make it 9-2.

Richman put on the finishing touches in the seventh when his blast over the left-field fence plated four runs to secure the win.

Illinois College bounced back in the second game, winning 15-1 in eight innings. McCain led the offensive attack for Grinnell (10-17, 8-10 Midwest Conference) with three hits.

Illinois College (12-20, 7-10 MWC) scored three runs in the fourth inning and never looked back. The Pioneers got their run in the sixth on Brown's RBI double to left.

Grinnell steps out of league play Tuesday with a 3 p.m. date with Central College in Pella.
