Grinnell softball team sees early lead disappear in loss to Central

GRINNELL, Iowa - After being limited to one hit in its opening game with Central College, the Grinnell College softball team came out on fire in the second game.

The Pioneers built a 3-0 lead through two innings, but Central rebounded to win 9-3 and complete the sweep Thursday at the Softball Complex.

Grinnell (15-16) put together a seven-hit attack in the second game, with Samantha Chu '24 and Alexa Okada '24 getting two hits each.

In the second inning, Chu hit an RBI single to right-center field to score Maddy O'Bryan '24, Kyra Killion '24 scored on a passed ball and Okada's double to left plated Chu.

Central (20-16) bounced back with four runs in the third and extended the lead from there.

Grinnell hit the ball hard, but right at fielders, several times in the opener and trailed just 1-0 through three innings before the Dutch came up with eight runs in the fourth on their way to a 9-0 win.

The Pioneers' lone hit in the game was a fourth-inning single over the third baseman's head by Lizzy Vermeulen '24.

On the defensive side of things, shortstop Amanda Ramirez '23 helped turn a double play for Grinnell to give her 10 for the season. That ties the Pioneer school record.

Grinnell has a key Midwest Conference doubleheader Saturday at Cornell College, beginning at 1 p.m.
