GC softball team takes down Knox twice in MWC twin bill

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College has had Knox College's number in softball in recent years, and the 2022 version of the Pioneers made sure that trend continued.

Grinnell posted a pair of 9-1 victories Sunday to stretch their winning streak against the Prairie Fire to 14 games. The Pioneers won the opener in five innings via the mercy rule and the second game in six frames.

One day after tying two school records, the Pioneers repeated that feat Sunday. In the second game, Amanda Ramirez '23 tied the school record for triples in a game for the second day in a row with two. Also in that contest, the Pioneers' three sacrifice flies tied a school mark.

Kathryn Vermeulen '24 tossed a five-hitter in the opener for Grinnell and struck out two batters. Grinnell pounded out 15 hits, with Ramirez and Emma Nelson '23 getting three each.

Lizzy Vermeulen '24 got Grinnell going in the second inning with an RBI triple to left. The Pioneers tacked on four runs in the third, as Samantha Chu '24 hit an RBI single through the left side, Ramirez scored on a wild pitch, Taylor Durak '24 sent an RBI double through the left side and Lizzy Vermeulen singled through the left side for another run.

In the fourth, Chu had an RBI single to left and Sophie Weber '25 belted a two-run single up the middle to make it 8-0.

After Knox scored in the top of the fifth, Ramirez ended the game in the bottom with her RBI single through the left side.

Maddy O'Bryan '24 threw a four-hitter in the second game and struck out five for her first pitching win of the year. Ramirez and Kami Anson '24 paced the offense with two hits each.

Grinnell (8-9, 3-1 Midwest Conference) took a 4-0 lead in the second inning when Okada plated a run with a double to center field, Ramirez hit a two-run triple down the left-field line and Kyra Killion '24 sent a sacrifice fly to left.

Knox (1-12, 0-2 MWC) scored in the fourth, but the Pioneers tallied three runs in the fifth on O'Bryan's sacrifice fly to left, an error and Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller's '24 sacrifice fly to left.

The Pioneers ended the game in the sixth when Sofia DiCarlo's '25 fielder's choice pushed across a run.

Grinnell is at home again Saturday when the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point visits for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
