GC makes a statement in runner-up finish at Midwest Conference Softball Tourney

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Though Grinnell College's softball team fell shy of a Midwest Conference Tournament championship Sunday, the Pioneers indeed made a statement.

Grinnell advanced to the MWC Tourney championship game for the first time since 2006 and defeated top seed Lake Forest College by the mercy rule for the only time in program history while placing second in the event.

Grinnell moved into the championship round with its 9-1, five-inning win over Lake Forest. In the title game, Illinois College rallied from a 4-2 deficit to record a 6-4 victory as the Lady Blues defended their championship from a year ago.

Grinnell combined potent hitting and a strong pitching performance from Kathryn Vermeulen '24 to eliminate the Foresters. Vermeulen scattered five hits and fanned three batters in earning the win.

Samantha Chu '24, Taylor Durak '24 and Mary Webb '23 each had three hits for Grinnell. The Foresters grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Pioneers responded with four runs in the third inning. Chu hit an RBI single to right field, Webb had a run-scoring single to left and Vermeulen sent a two-run double up the middle to make it 4-1.

The Pioneers finished it off with a five-run outburst in the fifth inning. Vermeulen scored on an error, Alexa Okada '24 had a run-scoring groundout, Chu hit an RBI double to left-center and Durak finished off the win with a two-run homer. The hit was Chu's 16th double of the season, breaking the school record she held with Maddie Matsubara.

Kambria Anson '24 sparked Grinnell's 10-hit attack against Illinois College with three hitz, while Okada and Lizzy Vermeulen '24 had two apiece. An RBI double to left-center by Amanda Ramirez '23, RBI infield single by Okada and sacrifice fly to right by Durak made it 3-0 in favor of Grinnell in the third.

Illinois College (22-12-1) answered with two runs in the bottom of the third, but the Pioneers came back in the fourth on Okada's RBI single to left. Illinois College scored four runs in the bottom of the inning and held on there for the win.

Maddy O'Bryan '24 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell (20-19).

During the tourney, Webb and Ramirez broke the school record for double plays in a season with 12 and Grinnell set a school record as a team for sacrifice flies in a year with 12.
