2nd-half run propels Ripon over Grinnell men's basketball team

RIPON, Wis. - The Grinnell College men's basketball team hadn't won at Ripon College since 2015, but the Pioneers looked poised to stop that string Saturday afternoon.

Grinnell rallied to take a 60-59 lead in the second half before the Red Hawks, the Midwest Conference preseason favorite, bounced back to earn a 98-82 win.

Ripon opened up a 10-point lead in the first half before the Pioneers stormed back, going on a 14-6 run to close within 46-44. Brady Vest '23 began the surge with a basket and free throw, Dylan Gestring '25 sank a 3-pointer, Aiden Gilbert '23 added a layup and Tate McLean '23, Dean Mazlish '23 and Gilbert continued with baskets to make it a two-point game.

The Red Hawks responded and led 51-44 at halftime. Ripon led 56-50 early in the second half when Grinnell (6-11, 2-7 MWC) went to work with a 10-3 run to take the lead. Gestring began the spurt with a 3-pointer, Sean Walser '26 and Tolu Johnson '25 had layups, Adam Phillips '23 converted a free throw and Gestring two more to make it 60-59 with 12:38 left.

But just as quickly, Ripon (9-9, 5-4 MWC) went on a run of its own and built a 73-63 lead. The hosts held on down the stretch to secure the win.

Gilbert led the Pioneers' balanced scoring attack with 13 points, Mitch Priest '25 tallied a career-high 12 and Gestring 11. Johnson grabbed seven boards, Priest distributed five assists and Gestring came up with a career-high four steals. Mazlish and Vest added three thefts apiece.

Grinnell will attempt to earn the season sweep against Knox College Wednesday when the two square off at 7:30 p.m. in Galesburg, Ill.
