Grinnell women stand tall against MWC preseason favorite Ripon before falling by 14

RIPON, Wis. - A scrappy Grinnell College women's basketball team wasn't intimidated facing the preseason Midwest Conference favorite on the road Saturday afternoon, trailing Ripon College by just four points at halftime.

But the Red Hawks caught fire in the third period, outscoring the visitors 20-7 in the frame on their way to a 64-50 win.

Grinnell (7-9, 4-5 MWC), which entered the game riding a three-game winning streak, got a game-high 16 points from Nikki Ware '25 and seven by Erin Lillis '24. Sara Booher '25 was strong inside, grabbing 11 boards and blocking two shots. Lillis led the assists department with four and Ware, Lillis, Skylar Thomas '26, Annabel Dougherty '25 and Elena Friedman '24 had one steal each.

Ripon (12-6, 8-1 MWC) bolted out to a 15-7 lead in the first period. Grinnell made a dent in that, though, closing within 17-11 by the end of the first period on Aiyana Rockwell's '24 layup.

The Pioneers caught fire early in the second period, opening it with a 7-1 run to tie the game at 18-all. Grace Marsh '25 drained a 3-pointer to lead things off and, after a Ripon free throw, Thomas scored on a layup and Lillis hit two free throws to force a  tie with 5:03 left.

Ripon bounced back to take leads of 25-20 and 27-22 before Friedman's trey brought Grinnell within two with under a minute left. Ripon got a layup right before halftime for a 29-25 lead entering the locker room.

The Red Hawks opened the third period with a 14-0 run and were up 49-32 at its conclusion. Grinnell held an 18-15 scoring edge in the final period.

Grinnell has another big league game Wednesday against Knox College, which entered Saturday unbeaten in the MWC. Action in Galesburg, Ill, begins at 5:30 p.m.
