GC women's track and field team races by the field to win Hilltop Invitational title

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Grinnell College's women's track and field team kicked off 2023 in impressive fashion Saturday, claiming the title at the Hilltop Invitational hosted by Cornell College.


The Pioneers tallied 103 points to beat the host school by a solo point and third-place Mount Mercy University by nine.

The Pioneers earned a pair of event titles, as Keely Miyamoto '26 was first in the 3000-meter run in 10 minutes, 52.50 seconds and Melanie Oden '25 took home gold in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 5 inches.

Miyamoto's win was the start of a strong Grinnell charge in the 3000, as Emma Schaefer '23 was third (11:12.71), Hannah Roark '26 placed fourth (11:28.05) and Mira Diamond-Berman '25 took fifth (11:31.62).

Grinnell had three individual runners-up - Sonia Edassery '24 in the 200 (27.51), Sam Reid '23 in the 800 (2:36.54) and Eleanor Elliott-Rude '25 in the long jump (14-11 ½). Edassery's time is seventh in program history.

Also placing second was the 4x200 relay team of Edassery, Caitlin Ong '26, Maile Crowe '25 and Athena Frasca '23. Their time was 1:53.58.

Edassery and Ava Taylor '25 were third and fifth in the 60 dash in 8.40 and 8.53, respectively, with Edassery's time ranking eighth in program history. Frasca and Crowe were third and fourth in the 200 in 27.67 and 28.59.

Sadie Staker '24 placed fourth in the 400 in 1:06.23 and sixth in the 60 hurdles in 10.73. Julia Sheehan-Klenk '23 took third in the 800 in 2:37.07, Mira Vollmayr-Lee '26 was fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 26-3/4  and Diana Barba '26 and Talia Harrison '26 were fifth and sixth in the mile in 5:45.41 and 5:46.02.

Also for Grinnell, Kylie Galowitz '26 recorded the sixth-best weight throw performance in program history with a throw of 38-4 ¾

The Pioneers host the Grinnell Invitational next Saturday.
