GC men's soccer team hands Blueboys first conference loss

GRINNELL, Iowa - Illinois College entered Saturday's contest at Springer Field unbeaten in Midwest Conference play, but Grinnell College made sure the Blueboys didn't leave that way.

The Pioneers got a goal with 11 minutes to play and hung on down the stretch - playing the final nine minutes a man down after a record card - to topple the visitors 1-0 in men's soccer action.

The teams battled to a scoreless tie for 79 minutes when Oliver Northing '25 took a free kick from 5 yards outside the box on the left side. The perfectly-placed kick went to the far post, whizzing past the diving Blueboy keeper and into the net. It was Northing's second goal of the season and eighth of his career.

The victory was key for the Pioneers in MWC play as they improved to 1-2-1 in the league and 4-4-4 in all games. Grinnell won the shots battle 13-10 with Northing taking five shots and Anthony Hong '27 and Samuel Gojjam '27 adding two apiece.

Carter Benson '24 and Jayson Kunkel '26 combined on the shutout at keeper for Grinnell, with Kunkel making two saves.

Illinois College, which entered the contest averaging nearly three goals a game, dipped to 2-1 in the league and 6-4-1 overall.

Grinnell has a week off before hosting Augustana College in non-conference play next Saturday.
