GC men's basketball team hops into win column with decisive victory over Barclay

GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's men's basketball team broke into the win column, and then some, with a 151-102 rout of Barclay College Friday night in Darby Gymnasium.

Kai Te Huki '27 tied a school record for free throw percentage with a perfect 100 percent success rate, hitting all 10 shots he took. While more than two dozen players have also been perfect from the stripe with a minimum of 10 shots made, Te Huki is the first post-pandemic.

Gabe Garcia '27 was also sharp from the line, hitting 12-of-13 shots while tallying 36 points. Te Huki added 25 points, Jordan Lee '27 scored 21 and Sean Murphy '26 poured in 12. Lee was 6-of-12 from 3-point land.

Carson DeBruhl '27 grabbed eight rebounds and Tolu Johnson '25 tallied seven. Lee added seven assists, while Garcia and Johnson each had four steals.

Grinnell (1-1) took a little while to get traction, trailing 18-13 before going on a nine-point run. Zach Rosen '26 began the spurt with a layup and Jackson Leone '25 cashed in on a 3-pointer to tie it.

Just a bit later, Dillon Gestring '25 made a layup and Garcia two free throws for a 22-18 lead. It was back and forth with Barclay (0-3) after that before the Pioneers stretched their cushion to 10 with 3:09 left in the half.

That's when the Pioneers delivered their knockout punch, finishing the half with a 17-point run for a 78-51 lead at intermission. Murphy sparked the push with a pair of 3-pointers, while Te Huki and Leone had one each. Ryan Tarighi '27 added a basket and free throw and Garcia a bucket.

The same two teams meet Saturday in Darby Gymnasium, with a 1 p.m. starting time.
