Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Ted Schultz

Grinnell uses strong late run to snap 5-game losing streak to Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa - Grinnell College entered Tuesday night's game at Wartburg College with a five-game losing streak against the Knights, dating back to 2013.

Additionally, Grinnell had lost five games in a row to American Rivers Conference teams, with the last victory coming before the pandemic.

Both streaks came to a screeching halt as Grinnell rallied from an early 13-point deficit to trip up the Knights 102-97. Kai Te Huki '27 and Gabe Garcia '27 provided a strong one-two scoring punch for Grinnell (3-1), scoring 31 and 18 points, respectively. Tolu Johnson '25 grabbed 10 rebounds, while Zach Rosen '26 dished out six assists and also had four steals.

Wartburg (0-2) bolted out to a 19-6 lead in the first six minutes and was later up 25-14 before Grinnell stormed back with a run of 13 unanswered points. John Vincent '26 and Johnson began the spurt with a pair of close-range baskets, followed by 3-pointers by Tanner Deal '27 and Dillon Gestring '25 to make it 25-24. A trey by Sean Walser '26 put the Pioneers ahead by two points.

Grinnell led 46-43 at intermission, and the game continued to be a dogfight for a good portion of the second half. Wartburg gained its last lead of 88-87 with 4:00 left before Rosen drained a 3-pointer and Johnson and Gestring connected on buckets for a six-point Pioneer edge with 2:27 left. The Knights never got closer than five points after that.

Grinnell is on the road again this weekend with a contest at Principia College. Tip-off Saturday is at 1 p.m.
