Huge 1st-half spurt sends Grinnell men's basketball team past Lawrence

GRINNELL, Iowa – After seeing its 11-game home winning streak against Lawrence University snapped last season, the Grinnell College men's basketball team made amends Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers blitzed Lawrence 89-58 at Darby Gymnasium to stay unbeaten in Midwest Conference play while moving to 7-1 overall. Grinnell is 3-0 in the league for the first time since 2018-19 and owns a seven-game winning streak.

The Pioneers, who are off to their best start since the 2013-14 campaign, saw Kai Te Huki '27 erupt for 24 points and Jordan Lee '27 add 13. Te Huki was 4-of-10 from 3-point land and Ryan Tarighi '27 added three treys.

Te Huki and Dillon Gestring '25 had six rebounds apiece, while Gabe Garcia '27 distributed five assists. Gestring blocked four shots and Garcia swatted away two.

In the steals department, Garcia, Te Huki, Zach Rosen '26, Gestring and Nick Courtney '26 had three apiece.

Lawrence, 0-7 overall and 0-2 in the MWC, built a 29-23 lead with 6:13 left in the first half before the Pioneers erupted with a 25-2 run over the next five minutes to go ahead 48-31. Jackson Leone '25 started things with two free throws and Lee had a layup. After a Lawrence basket, Te Huki made two free throws and a trey to push Grinnell ahead 32-31.

Rosen had a free throw, Courtney and Rosen drained treys and Sean Murphy '26 sank a pair of charity tosses for a 41-31 lead. Nick Lundy '27 added consecutive layups and Gestring a trio of free throws for a 48-31 lead.

Grinnell was ahead 51-35 at halftime and cruised from there with a 38-23 edge in the second half.

The Pioneers are back home Wednesday when Cornell College visits for a MWC test. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
