Grinnell men push winning streak to 8 games with home victory over Cornell

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's basketball team continued to roll Wednesday night, pulling away in the second half to top Cornell College 98-84 at Darby Gymnasium.

At 8-1, the Pioneers are off to their best start to a season since 2011-12. They are 4-0 in the Midwest Conference for the first time since 2018-19, and their eight-game winning streak is the longest since that same season.

Gabe Garcia '27 led the Pioneers with 29 points, while Sean Murphy '26 sizzled the nets with 6-of-8 shooting from 3-point range while finishing with 21 points. Kai Te Huki '27 was also in double figures with 11.

Garcia also had eight rebounds and Tolu Johnson '25 grabbed six. Jordan Lee '27 dished out four assists, Johnson blocked two shots and Garcia and Dillon Gestring '25 each added two steals.

Cornell, 2-7 overall and 0-2 in the MWC, kept the game close the entire first half and into the second. Nursing a two-point lead with 11:17 to go in the game, the Pioneers opened things up with a crucial seven-point run. Zach Rosen '26 began the spurt with a jumper, David Bluder '25 connected on a trey and Ryan Tarighi '27 scored inside to make it a 71-62 lead with 9:28 left.

Grinnell built its lead to 16 on Gestring's dunk with just under six minutes left, and later went up by 17 on Murphy's trey before winning by 14.

Grinnell closes its pre-holiday slate Saturday when Alma College of Michigan visits Darby Gymnasium. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
