JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – A school record and several top three finishes propelled the Grinnell College women's team on the opening day of the 2023 Midwest Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday.
The school mark came from
Eva Carchidi '24, running her first indoor competition of the season after finishing up basketball last weekend. Her school mark came in the 60-meter dash prelims, where her clocking of 8.04 seconds topped the field and broke
Paige Olowu's mark of 8.06 set in 2021.
Keely Miyamoto '26 continued an impressive season with a runner-up finish in the 5000-meter run, posting a time of 17:58.00. It's the first time a GC runner has gone sub-18 since 2008.
Also placing second was the 4x200 relay team of
Sonia Edassery '24,
Ava Taylor '25,
Maile Crowe '25 and
Athena Frasca '23 in 1:48.56, the second-best time in program history.
Edassery, Crowe, Frasca and
Crystal Kaczmarczyk '25 placed third in the sprint medley relay with a time of 4:26.97, 10
th in program history.
Miyamoto's showing led an impressive Grinnell charge in the 5000, as
Emma Schaefer '23 finished sixth in 19:01.19 and
Mira Diamond-Berman '25 finished eighth in 19:20.10.
Hannah Roark '26 placed third in the mile in 5:29.03 and Kaczmarczyk was seventh in 5:36.81.
Eleanor Elliott-Rude '25 sailed 15 feet, 8-3/4 inches in the long jump to finish eighth. That is the ninth-best jump in program history. Additionally,
Sadie Staker '24 qualified for the final of the 60 hurdles with a time of 10.58. That was eighth-best in the prelims.
Grinnell is third in the team standings after the opening day with 35 points. Ripon College is the leader at 65, while Monmouth College holds down second with 46.
The meet continues Saturday.
