Fast start, strong pitching send Grinnell baseball team past Westminster in opener

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Though its foe was playing its ninth game of the season and Grinnell College had yet to take the field for a contest, the Pioneer baseball team wasn't fazed a bit while earning a 9-4 victory over Westminster College of Missouri Saturday.

The Pioneers got their bats going early and often, plus got a superb collegiate pitching debut from Connor Goodson '26. Goodson worked 4.2 innings in a game halted in the sixth frame, scattering two hits and striking out five. Jakob Runkel '26 worked the final third of an inning and struck out one.

Ian Brown '24 sparked Grinnell's hitting attack with a solo homer and double.

Grinnell tallied three runs in the first when Sean Richardson '24 crossed the plate on an error, Luke Porter '23 scored on a wild pitch and Brown came across on an error.

The Pioneers made it 4-1 in the second when Mac McCain '25 belted an RBI double. In the third, the Pioneers exploded for five runs. Brown blasted a two-run homer, Nate L'Esperance '23 hit an RBI triple and then scored on a wild pitch and Michael Flaherty '25 came across on a passed ball.

Grinnell is 1-0, while Westminster fell to 4-5. The teams play in a twin bill Sunday, starting at noon.
