Huge rally helps Grinnell finish off Westminster with authority

FULTON, Mo. - Down to its final two outs and trailing by five runs, Grinnell College's baseball team had its back to the wall while in danger of being swept by Westminster College of Missouri Sunday.

But then the Pioneers got offensive - literally.

Grinnell erupted for 10 runs with the aid of four hits in the top of the ninth inning to rally for an 11-8 victory over the Blue Jays in the second game of a twin bill. The win came on the heels of a 1-0 setback to Westminster in the opener.

Grinnell (2-1) finished the weekend by winning two of three games over the Blue Jays.

The Pioneers loaded the bases in the top of the ninth with one out, as Ethan Crawford '25 walked, Nikolas Ruden '26 singled to center and Michael Flaherty '25 walked. After pinch runner Ben Schwartz '24 scored on a passed ball, Cole Philpott '25 walked to again load the bases.

Mac McCain '25 followed with an RBI single and Flaherty scored on a wild pitch, bringing the Pioneers within 6-4. Following Sean Richardson's '24 walk, Luke Porter '23 belted a grand slam homer over the right-field fence to push the Pioneers ahead 8-6.

Ian Brown '24 was then hit by a pitch before Crawford, batting for the second time in the inning, bashed a two-run homer to center to make it 10-6. Grinnell added yet another run when McCain's bases-loaded walk plated Josh Fournier '24.

Westminster (5-6) managed to score two runs in the bottom of the inning before the Pioneers shut the door to secure the win.

Grinnell scored its other run in the second inning when an error allowed Crawford to cross the plate.

Crawford led the Pioneers' overall offensive attack with three hits, while Porter added two. Ryan Jungers '24 was the winning pitcher, throwing 3.2 innings.

In the opener, a strong Pioneer pitching performance went for naught. Three Grinnell throwers limited Westminster to just three hits. Garrett Nasif '24 issued two hits and fanned five batters in five innings, Daniel Shaul '26 tossed 2.1 innings and struck out three while giving up one hit and Simon Lane '23 worked a third of an inning of hitless ball.

The Pioneers managed just one hit themselves, a single by Flaherty.

Grinnell heads to Pensacola, Fla., later this week for an eight-game stint. That begins Saturday when the Pioneers take on Edgewood College and Spalding University.
