Grinnell baseball team plays tight games with foes in Florida before falling

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Grinnell College's baseball team played a pair of opponents to tight games twice Saturday in its spring break openers in Florida before dropping each contest.

Edgewood College rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Pioneers 6-4 in the opening game. In the second game, Spalding University - a squad receiving votes for the national rankings - broke away from a 4-all tie in the eighth inning to post a 9-4 win.

Grinnell (2-3) managed three hits against Edgewood, singles from Mac McCain '25, Nikolas Ruden '26 and Michael Flaherty '26. Grinnell jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning when Ethan Crawford '26 scored on Ruden's single to right, Nate L'Esperance '23 stole home and Ruden crossed the plate on Flaherty's single to right.

Edgewood (6-5) closed the gap to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth before the Pioneers tacked on a run in the fifth on Ruden's sacrifice fly to left.

Edgewood took the lead with three runs in the sixth and got an insurance run in the eighth.

Grinnell starting pitcher Garrett Nasif '24 tossed three-hit ball and struck out seven in five innings. Kenji Kajita '25 was the pitcher of record.

In the second game, Sean Richardson '24 and Sean Tashjian '25 each had two hits for the Pioneers. Spalding took the early lead before Crawford knocked in a run in the bottom of the first when he reached on an error, scoring McCain, to make it 2-1.

Spalding (10-2) then broke away for a 4-1 lead, but Grinnell jumped right back into contention in the bottom of the seventh with a three-run outburst. Flaherty's RBI single plated Tashjian, Josh Fournier '24 came across on a wild pitch and Richardson knocked in Flaherty with a single.

However, Spalding answered with a five-run eighth inning to secure the win.
