Grinnell baseball team drops pair of tough decisions on spring break

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Grinnell College's baseball team lost a pair of tough decisions on its spring break trip to Florida Sunday.

The Pioneers dropped a 5-4 decision to Carroll University to begin the day, and then lost 14-4 to sixth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Grinnell lost to Carroll despite outhitting its foe 13-9. Sean Richardson '24 swung the hot bat for Grinnell, going 4-for-5. Ethan Crawford '25 added a pair of hits.

Carroll jumped on top 3-0 before Grinnell got on the board in the fifth on Richardson's RBI single. After Carroll went up 5-1, Richardson had an RBI single and Crawford plated two runs with a single to bring the Pioneers within 5-4.

That's as close as Grinnell could get, though. Daniel Shaul '26 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell.

Grinnell was tied with UW-Whitewater 2-2 in the second inning before the Warhawks pulled away with an eight-run frame.

Crawford and Sean Tashjian '25 each had two hits for the 2-5 Pioneers. Grinnell's two second-inning runs came on an RBI double to left by Tashjian and an error. Grinnell got another run in the fourth on Tashjian's solo homer and Crawford's RBI single in the fifth completed the Pioneers' scoring.

Danny Pocklington '23 was tagged with the pitching loss for Grinnell. Richardson had two stolen bases on the day, giving him 40 for his career which ranks sixth all-time at Grinnell.

The Pioneers meet the University of Wisconsin-Platteville on Monday.
