GC softball team is impressive with pair of wins on opening day of spring break trip

CLERMONT, Fla. - Grinnell College's softball team was nothing short of impressive on the opening day of its spring break trip to Florida Sunday.

The Pioneers' offense was in high gear in the opener against Bates College, as they pounded out 13 hits in a 7-1 victory at Legends Way. Taylor Durak '24 led the way with a homer and two singles, while Samantha Chu '24 nearly hit for the cycle with a triple, double and single. Mary Webb '23 contributed a home run, as well.

Christin Hartman '24 tossed a complete game in getting the pitching win, scattering seven hits and striking out five.

Durak smoked a homer over the left-field fence in the second inning and Webb added a shot over the center-field wall right after that, making it 2-0.

Bates cut the gap in half in the top of the third before Grinnell got two runs in the bottom, one on Durak's RBI single to left and another when Kambria Anson '24 plated a run with an infield single to make it 4-1.

The Pioneers got one run in the fourth on Chu's RBI double down the third-base line. Grinnell added two more runs in the sixth on an RBI triple to right field by Chu and Durak's run-scoring single through the left side.

Grinnell followed that up by sneaking past a scrappy St. Lawrence University team by a 3-2 margin. The defensive-paced affair saw neither squad score until the seventh inning, when the Pioneers got all the runs they needed in the top half.

Three straight RBI doubles to left-center field were recorded by Chu, Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24 and Kyra Killion '24 to put the Pioneers on top. Stellar defense and pitcher Kathryn Vermeulen '24 helped shut the door in the bottom of the inning to limit the Saints' rally to just two runs.

Chu boosted her career doubles total to 23 during the day, pushing her to sixth all-time at Grinnell. Durak's first-game homer was the eighth of her career, fourth-best at Grinnell.

Vermeulen pitched a complete game, giving up six hits and striking out seven. As a team, Grinnell managed five hits by five different players.

The 4-2 Pioneers play twice more Monday at Legends Way against Oberlin College and The College at Old Westbury.
