Grinnell softball team remains perfect on spring break trip with wins over Oberlin and Old Westbury

CLERMONT, Fla. - Grinnell College's softball team maintained its perfect mark on spring break by disposing of both Oberlin College and The College at Old Westbury Monday at Legends Way.

The Pioneers tied a school record for triples in a game with three in an 11-7 victory over Oberlin to start the day. They followed with a 9-1 win over Old Westbury in a five-run contest halted due to the mercy rule.

Grinnell pounded out 11 hits against Oberlin, including two each from Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24, Amanda Ramirez '23 and Kambria Anson '24. Maddy O'Bryan '24 upped her pitching record to 2-0, working 5.2 innings and striking out one. Emma Trani '26 finished off the win for her first collegiate save.

Grinnell jumped on top 4-0 with a run in the first inning and three in the third. Ramirez scored via an error in the first, Samantha Chu '24 belted a two-run triple to right in the third and Emma Nelson '23 pushed across a run with a sacrifice bunt later in the third.

Oberlin sliced the gap in half before Grinnell got going again in the fifth on Taylor Durak's '24 two-run shot over the left-field fence. Oberlin added a run in the bottom of the inning, but Grinnell scored twice in the sixth on Anson's RBI triple to center and an RBI single by Ramirez up the middle, making it 8-3.

Oberlin crept within 8-7 in the bottom of the sixth, but the Pioneers tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh as Hannah Dykstra '25 swatted an RBI triple to right, Anson knocked in a run with a single to right and Alexa Okada '24 scored on an error.

Grinnell (6-2) stretched its winning streak to four after that with the win over Old Westbury. Christin Hartman '24 tossed a four-hitter and struck out four, while DiGiacomo-Zahller and Jasmine Oda '25 had three hits each to spark Grinnell's 14-hit attack.

The New York-based squad opened the scoring in the first, but Sofia DiCarlo '25 gave the Pioneers a lead they would never relinquish in the second with a two-run single to left. The Pioneers tacked on two more runs in the fourth as Anson slapped an RBI triple to right and DiGiacomo-Zahller added an RBI single to right.

In the fifth, Oda blasted a solo homer to left and Dykstra knocked in a run with a single to center before stealing home a bit later. Anne Becker '26 finished off the win with a hard  triple to right field, scoring two runs to end the game.

Grinnell plays the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Colby College Tuesday.
