Grinnell bounces back from earlier loss to dispose of Colby on spring break trip

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - After losing a hard-fought battle to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire for the first setback of its spring break trip, the Grinnell College softball team bounced back in impressive fashion against Colby College Tuesday.

The Pioneers broke a 3-all tie with two runs in the sixth inning and held firm from there to knock off Colby 5-3 at Diamond Plex.

Grinnell set a school record by turning three doubles plays in the contest while improving to 7-3 on the season. Maddy O'Bryan '24 and Christin Hartman '24 combined on tossing an eight-hitter, with O'Bryan fannings two batters in 4.1 innings and Hartman striking out one while pitching the final 2.2 innings and earning the win.

Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24 had two of the Pioneers' six hits. Grinnell got out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning when Jasmine Oda '24, Hannah Dykstra '25 and Emma Nelson '23 all scored on a pair of errors.

Colby tied the game in the bottom of the frame and neither team scored again until the sixth when Kyra Killion '24 came across on an error and Alexa Okada '24 belted an RBI double to right.

Grinnell managed 10 hits in a 5-3 loss to UW-Eau Claire earlier in the day, with Samantha Chu '24, Taylor Durak '24 and Okada all had two hits.

After falling behind 3-0, Grinnell closed within a run as Okada hit an RBI single up the middle in the third inning and Sofia DiCarlo '25 plated a run with a single through the right side in the fourth.

UW-Eau Claire got two runs in the top of the seventh before the Pioneers got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Mary Webb '23 hit a sacrifice fly to right. Grinnell had the bases loaded when the game ended.

Kathryn Vermeulen '24 had the tough-luck pitching loss, as she fanned seven batters.

Grinnell has Wednesday off before taking on St. Olaf College and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater the next day.
