Crawford ties school mark for doubles in 7-5 setback to Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. - Ethan Crawford '25 tied a school record for doubles in a game, but it wasn't enough as the Grinnell College baseball team opened Midwest Conference play with a 7-5 loss to Beloit College at ABC Supply Stadium Monday.

Crawford belted a trio of two-baggers to match the Grinnell record held by five other players. The most recent Pioneer besides Crawford to achieve the feat was Walker Bell against Knox College in 2013.

Crawford had three of Grinnell's 11 hits, while Josh Fournier '24 also had three hits.

Crawford's RBI double in the top of the first inning opened the scoring, but Beloit answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and another in the third for a 3-1 lead.

Grinnell (3-9, 0-1 MWC) tied things up in the top of the fourth when Nate L'Esperance '23 hit an RBI single to center and later scored on an error. Beloit scored twice in the bottom of the fourth, and Grinnell got a run back in the fifth on Sean Tashjian's '25 RBI single to center.

Beloit (6-5, 1-0 MWC) answered with two runs in the seventh for a 7-4 lead. Girnnell closed out the scoring in the eighth when Ian Brown '24 knocked in a run with a groundout to short.

Garrett Nasif '24 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell, fanning eight in 3.1 innings of work.

The teams meet Tuesday for a doubleheader.
