Pioneer baseball comeback falls just short against Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. - Grinnell College's rally fell just a tad short as the Pioneers lost the second game of a Tuesday twin bill against Beloit College at ABC Supply Stadium.

Beloit built a 7-3 lead in the game before the Pioneers responded with two runs in the eighth inning and another in the ninth. However, the hosts shut the door to secure the 7-6 victory and the series sweep.

Grinnell (3-11, 0-3 Midwest Conference) swatted out 10 hits in the game, including two each by Luke Porter '23, Ethan Crawford '25, Nathan McCurdy '25 and Josh Fournier '24.

The Pioneers scored solo runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings on Sean Richardson's '24 RBI single to right, Porter's run-scoring double to right-center and a sacrifice fly to center by Michael Flaherty '25.

Facing a four-run gap, Grinnell scored twice in the eighth on Fournier's RBI and a steal of home by McCurdy. McCurdy had an RBI single to right in the ninth.

Daniel Shaul '26 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell, striking out five in four innings.

Beloit (8-5, 3-0 MWC) won Tuesday's opener 11-1 in eight innings despite only winning the hitting battle 11-10. Richardson, Sean Tashjian '25, Nate L'Esperance '23 and Mac McCain '25 each had two hits for the Pioneers, who got their run in the seventh inning on Tashjian's RBI single through the left side.

Ryan Jungers '24 was tagged with the pitching loss, striking out four in five innings.

During the games, Richardson moved up to fifth on Grinnell's all-time stolen bases leader board with 45.

Grinnell is back in action Thursday with a twin bill at Cornell College in Mount Vernon. The contests had originally been scheduled for Wednesday.
