GC baseball team snaps skid with come-from-behind victory over Cornell

Box Score MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - In dire need of a Midwest Conference victory, Grinnell College's baseball team delivered in a big way Thursday.

The Pioneers used a four-run outburst in the final inning of the opener to rally past Cornell College 6-3, snapping a six-game losing streak. Grinnell led the second game 1-0 before the contest was halted in the fourth inning when a bank of lights went out. That game will be resumed at a later date.

Trailing by a run entering the final frame of the opener, Grinnell came up with four runs. Sean Tashjian's '25 sacrifice fly scored the first run, Josh Fournier '24 knocked in a run with a single to center, an error allowed another run to score and Ethan Crawford '25 plated the final run on a sacrifice fly.

Grinnell (4-11, 1-3 MWC) opened the scoring in the fourth inning on Cole Philpott's '25 single to right, but Cornell (9-7, 2-2 MWC) tied it in the fifth. The Pioneers went ahead 2-1 in the sixth on Philpott's RBI double to left, but again the Rams rallied and went ahead 3-2 in the seventh.

Grinnell outhit the hosts 11-6, with Fournier collecting three hits and Luke Porter '23 and Philpott adding two each. Augie Ros '25, the fourth of five Grinnell pitchers, got the win and Ian Feld '25 worked a scoreless ninth for the save.

Grinnell opens the home portion of its 2023 schedule this weekend when defending MWC champion Lawrence University visits Pioneer Park. Saturday's solo game is set for 2 p.m., while Sunday's twin bill is slated for 11 a.m.
