Schaefer's win in 5000-meter run sparks Grinnell women's track and field team

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Emma Schaefer '23 cruised to victory in the 5000-meter run to spark the performance of Grinnell College's women's track and field team at Saturday's Mustang Open hosted by Mount Mercy University.

Schaefer won the race 18 minutes, 53.95 seconds, beating her nearest foe by more than 40 seconds. Sophia Ford '25 also fared well in the race, taking fifth in 20:42.39.

Sadie Staker '24 was second in the 400 hurdles in 1:09.28 and ninth in the 100 hurdles in 17.76. Crystal Kaczmarczyk '25 also had a big day, taking fourth in the 1500 (5:15.13) and fifth in the 800 (2:31.99).

Kylie Galowitz '26 added a throw of 105 feet, 4 inches in the hammer, which ranks seventh in program history.

Grinnell returns to Cedar Rapids on Friday for the Rittgers Invitational, hosted by Coe College.
