Grinnell baseball team falls twice to Cornell

GRINNELL, Iowa – Though the weather was warm and sunny Thursday, the day turned out to be a tough one for the Grinnell College baseball team at Pioneer Park.

The Pioneers lost an 11-2 decision to Cornell College in the completion of a suspended game, and then fell victim to a late Rams' rally as the visitors escaped with a 7-3 win.

Grinnell led the first game 1-0 through three innings of the March 30 game before play was suspended. On Thursday, Cornell erupted for six runs in the fourth inning and never looked back.

Grinnell (9-14, 6-6 Midwest Conference) managed nine hits in the game, with two apiece by Luke Porter '23, Cole Philpott '25 and Mac McCain '25. After the Rams went up 6-1, the Pioneers got a run back in the sixth on Philpott's RBI single to left-center.

However, Cornell (14-9, 5-4 MWC) struck for a run in the bottom of the sixth and four more in the eighth. Danny Pocklington '23 suffered the pitching loss.

Grinnell broke out to a 2-0 lead in the second game when Sean Tashjian '25 hit a solo homer to left and Philpott added an RBI double to left.

The teams each got a run in the third, Grinnell's on a solo homer by Porter to left-center. Grinnell held a 3-2 lead through seven innings before Cornell scored five in the eighth and held on from there for the win.

Tashjian and Porter each had two hits for Grinnell, and Jakob Runkel '26 was tagged with the loss.
