Grinnell bounces back to topple Chicago in 2nd game of wild doubleheader

GRINNELL, Iowa - What do you get in a baseball doubleheader when you combine explosive offenses with a bit of help from strong wind gusts blowing out toward the left-center field fence?

A combined 67 runs and 57 hits.

After losing the opening game of Monday's Midwest Conference series by a 21-14 count, Grinnell College roared back in the second game at Pioneer Park to topple the University of Chicago 18-14.

Grinnell had four home runs in the first game, seventh-best in program history, and Luke Porter's '23 10 total bases in the contest is 10th all-time at Grinnell.

Grinnell (10-15, 7-7 MWC) rallied from a 13-8 deficit in the second game with the aid of a seven-run sixth inning. The Pioneers pounded out 17 hits in the contest to help offset the seven errors they committed. Sean Richardson '24 went 4-for-5 in the game and Porter was 3-for-5. Getting two hits each were Josh Fournier '25, Nikolas Ruden '26 and Ian Brown '24.

Porter's two-run shot to right-center field in the first opened the scoring. The Pioneers eked out solo runs in the second and third on Ethan Crawford's '25 RBI single to center and Mac McCain's '25 sacrifice fly and got two runs in the fourth on Cole Philpott's '25 two-run homer to left. Brown and Richardson each had RBI singles in the fifth, but the Maroons still led 13-8 thanks to a six-run fourth inning.

The Pioneers went ahead to stay with a seven-run sixth inning. Porter had a two-run single, Ruden an RBI single, Philpott a bases-loaded walk and Sean Tashjian '25 got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Brown added a two-run homer in the seventh and Porter a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Matthew Nakamoto '25, the third of our Grinnell pitchers, struck out three batters in two innings to earn the win.

In the opener, Grinnell broke out to a 5-3 lead in the first inning with the help of Ruden's three-run triple, a bases-loaded walk by Philpott and RBI by McCain. Chicago (14-11, 8-5 MWC) then erupted for nine runs in the second inning and two in the third for a 14-5 lead.

A solo homer by Ruden and RBI single by Richardson in the fourth and sixth innings helped Grinnell close within 15-7. Porter had a two-run homer to left-center and McCain a solo shot to the same spot in the seventh as Grinnell made it 18-11. In the eight, Fournier knocked in a run and Porter hit a two-run homer to left.

Porter was 3-for-5 at the plate in the game, while Fournier, Ruden, McCain, Evan Borberg '24 and Richardson added two hits each. Ryan Jungers '24 was the pitcher of record.

Porter now ranks seventh at Grinnell for season homers with nine and ninth for doubles with 12. As a team, Grinnell's 25 homers are eighth all-time.

On the career chart, Porter ranks eighth in homers with 15, 10th in doubles with 27 and 10th in fielding putouts with 428. Richardson is fourth in stolen bases with 46.

The Pioneers head to Jacksonville, Ill., this weekend for a three-game series.
