Grinnell earns split with Lawrence in games featuring completely different tones

GRINNELL, Iowa - Though both were part of a doubleheader Sunday, the two baseball games played at Pioneer Park could not have been more different.

Grinnell College rode timely hitting and solid pitching to a 4-0 shutout victory over defending Midwest Conference champion Lawrence University in Sunday's opener.

But the second game was a pure crazy, wild slugfest, as the teams combined for 23 hits and eight errors with Lawrence eking out an 18-17 win. Of the Vikings' nine hits in the game, seven were home runs.

Grinnell pitchers Jake Hull '24, Jakob Runkel '26 and Ian Feld '25 combined on a six-hitter in the first game. Winning pitcher Hull and Runkel each worked four innings, giving up three hits apiece. Hull fanned three batters and Runkel added five Ks. Feld tossed a perfect ninth inning and had a strikeout.

Grinnell (6-12, 3-4 MWC) got all the offense it needed in the third inning on Josh Fournier's '25 RBI single through the left side. The Pioneers added some insurance in the seventh inning when Ian Brown '24 blasted a three-run homer to left field, scoring Mac McCain '25 and Ethan Crawford '25.

Brown and Lucas Hadding '24 each had two hits for Grinnell.

Grinnell pounded out 14 hits in the second game, with Sean Tashjian '25 getting three and Fournier, Nikolas Ruden '26 and Hadding adding two each.

Grinnell erupted for five runs in the second inning, with Tashjian knocking in a run with a double and Ruden and Hadding adding RBI singles. Lawrence (5-9, 1-2 MWC) cut the gap to 5-4 in the third, but the Pioneers came back with a run in the fourth on an error.

The Vikings took an 8-6 lead in the top of the fifth, but the Pioneers responded with six tallies in the bottom of the fifth. Tashjian had a two-run triple, Crawford and Brown RBI doubles and Hadding a sacrifice fly.

Lawrence rallied, though, with five runs over the next three innings for a 13-12 lead. Things picked up for Grinnell in the eighth inning with a five-run outburst as Evan Borberg '24 had an RBI single and Fournier a grand slam homer.

However, the Vikings answered with five runs in the top of the ninth and hung on from there for the win. Borberg, the sixth Grinnell thrower, was the pitcher of record.

Grinnell plays a single game at Monmouth College Friday and two on Saturday.
