Grinnell baseball team shuts down Monmouth in series opener

MONMOUTH, Ill. - After last Sunday's shootout loss to end its series with Lawrence University, Grinnell College's baseball team bounced back in a big way Friday in its series opener against Monmouth College.

Three Grinnell pitchers combined on a three-hitter and the Pioneers scratched out a run in the top of the ninth inning to break a tie for a 3-2 Midwest Conference victory over the Fighting Scots.

Mac McCain '25, who went 4-for-4 at the plate, singled home Sean Richardson '24 in the ninth inning to provide what proved to be the game-winner.

Starting pitcher Jake Hull '24 worked a strong five innings, giving up two hits and fanning two. Jakob Runkel '26 tossed two innings of hitless ball and struck out one, while Ian Feld '25 earned the win with one-hit ball in two innings and striking out three.

Besides McCain's offensive prowess, Luke Porter '23 and Nikolas Ruden '26 each had two hits for Grinnell (7-12, 4-4 MWC). The Pioneers tied the game in the third inning on McCain's solo homer and went up 2-1 in the sixth when Ruden singled home Porter. Monmouth (7-12, 3-5 MWC) tied the game in the eighth.

Richardson had the lone stolen base in the game, boosting his career total to 44. That puts him fourth all-time at Grinnell and tied with Andrew Shults.

The teams meet for a doubleheader on Saturday.
