Pioneer softball team off to best start in MWC play since 2016 with sweep of Knox

GALESBURG, Ill. - With two wins over Knox College Sunday, Grinnell College's softball team is off to its best start in Midwest Conference play since 2016.

Grinnell moved to 4-0 in league competition, winning the opener 9-0 and taking the second contest by a 12-2 count in five innings. Grinnell is 13-7 overall, while the Prairie Fire fell to 0-2 in the MWC and 3-14 in all games.

The Pioneers pounded out 14 hits in the opener, including two each by Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24, Amanda Ramirez '23, Taylor Durak '24, Samantha Chu '24, Kyra Killion '24 and Kambria Anson '24.

Maddy O'Bryan '24, Kathryn Vermeulen '24 and Lane Kohler '25 combined on the pitching shutout. O'Bryan, who struck out two and gave up three hits in four innings, was the winner.

Grinnell broke a scoreless tie in the third inning on Chu's RBI double. That led into a big fourth inning in which the Pioneers scored six times. Durak's two-run double and RBI singles by DiGiancomo-Zahller and Ramirez sparked the run. Grinnell finished its scoring in the sixth on Anson's run-scoring single.

The Pioneers repeated their hot hitting in the second game, again collecting 14 hits. Chu had three hits and DiGiacomo-Zahller, Durak, Hannah Dykstra '25 and Lizzy Vermeulen '24 had two apiece.

Durak hit an RBI single to propel a two-run first inning, and Vermeulen had a homer to open a six-run second inning. Also in the second, Durak had a two-run double and Dykstra, Lizzy Vermeulen and Emma Nelson '23 hit RBI singles. Dykstra added an RBI double in the third inning.

Christin Hartman '24 and Emma Trani '26 combined on a six-hitter, with Hartman getting the win. She fanned one in three innings.

During the day, Chu moved up to fourth at Grinnell for career doubles with 28. Durak is sixth in career RBIs with 61 and Anson jumped into the top 10 in stolen bases with 21.
