Grinnell softball team bounces back from opening-game loss to stymie Storm

INDIANOLA, Iowa - After losing a narrow 3-2 decision to Simpson College in Wednesday's opener, Grinnell College's softball team came back with a vengeance in the nightcap.

The Pioneers broke out to a 9-1 lead against Simpson, a team receiving votes for the national rankings, and hung on for a 10-8 victory. Grinnell's run total in the game is the highest surrendered by the Storm this season.

A six-run third inning was the clincher for Grinnell (14-8), sparked by Kyra Killion's '24 grand slam homer to left. Amanda Ramirez '23, Taylor Durak '24 and Jasmine Oda '25 all had two hits in the game, while Kathryn Vermeulen '24 got the pitching win in relief.

Grinnell grabbed a 3-0 lead right off the bat on Oda's RBI single to center and a two-run single to right by Sofia DiCarlo '25.

Simpson (18-6) cut the gap to 3-1 in the second before the Pioneers' big outburst in the third. Oda's RBI single to left-center and an RBI bunt single by Ramirez sandwiched Killion's bases-clearing shot, the second homer of her career.

Simpson made it 9-4 in the fourth and threatened in the fifth, loading the bases with none out before Vermeulen coaxed two fielder's choices and a popout to end the inning. The Storm managed three runs in the sixth to cut the gap to a run, but Grinnell got some insurance in the seventh on an RBI single by Ramirez down the right-field line.

Durak had three of Grinnell's hits in the first game, including a solo homer to left-center in the first inning. It was Durak's fifth homer of the season, which ranks fourth in program history.

Simpson scored three times in the fourth inning to go ahead for good. Grinnell made things interesting in the seventh on Samantha Chu's '24 RBI single to left before the Storm escaped with the win.

Besides Durak's hitting performance in the game, Ramirez and Kambria Anson '24 each had two hits. Christin Hartman '24 had a solid pitching effort, striking out three and giving up seven hits.

For the season, Grinnell now has 10 home runs this season, fifth-most in program history. The Pioneers' 114 RBIs are eighth all-time and 134 runs rank ninth.

Grinnell is off until next Tuesday when it plays Graceland University in Lamoni. Games are at 3 and 5 p.m.
