Grinnell softball team remains perfect in MWC play with sweep of Beloit

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's softball team kept its perfect Midwest Conference mark intact Sunday, breezing past Beloit College 8-0 in five innings and 12-4 in six frames.

Christin Hartman '24 fired her third consecutive shutout in the opener, a game that lasted a crisp 1 hour, 4 minutes. She gave up five hits and struck out three.

Kambria Anson '24 and Samantha Chu '24 each had two hits for the Pioneers, who are 10-0 in the MWC and 20-10 in all games. The Pioneers broke out to a 5-0 lead through the first two innings. Taylor Durak '24 belted an RBI double to left and Chu hit a run-scoring triple to right-center in the first frame. In the second, Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24 blasted a three-run double to left field.

Amanda Ramirez '23 hit an RBI triple to left-center in the fourth inning and Sofia DiCarlo '25 plated a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Another run came across on an error on the play to end the game via the mercy rule.

Grinnell had 13 hits in the second game, with Chu getting three of those. The Pioneers took the lead for good in the first inning with four runs. Ramirez had an RBI bunt single, Chu lifted a two-run homer to left-center and Hannah Dykstra '25 pushed across a run with a triple to left-center.

Beloit cut the lead in half in the third inning, but in the bottom of the third Durak hit a two-run homer to center and another run scored on an error to make it 7-2. Chu hit a two-run double to left-center in the fourth to push the lead to 9-2.

After the Buccaneers, who fell to 0-10 in the league and 8-22 overall, scored twice in the fifth, Grinnell finished the game with a three-run sixth. Jasmine Oda '25 had an RBI single up the middle and Kyra Killion '24 and Kathryn Vermeulen '24 drew bases-loaded walks.

Vermeulen got the pitching win, striking out four over four innings. Lane Kohler '25 worked the last two frames and fanned two batters.

Anson now ranks second in program history for career stolen bases with 28, Chu is third in doubles with 31 and Vermeulen fourth for pitching victories with 21.

Grinnell has a big test Tuesday when 25th-ranked Coe College visits town for a doubleheader.
