Grinnell rides big inning, strong pitching from Hartman to knock off 17th-ranked Coe

GRINNELL, Iowa - After losing an early lead in the opener against 17th-ranked Coe College, the Grinnell College softball team came back with a vengeance in the second game.

Thanks to a huge third inning and stellar pitching performance from Christin Hartman '24, Grinnell won 5-2 at the Softball Complex for its first victory over a nationally-ranked team since 2018.

The Pioneers broke a scoreless tie in third with a five-run outburst sparked by Jasmine Oda's '25 two-run single up the middle.

Hartman gave up eight hits, struck out four and walked just one while posting her 11th win of the season, third all-time at Grinnell.

Taylor Durak led the offense for Grinnell (21-11) with two hits. Besides Oda's big hit in the third, Alexa Okada '24 hit an RBI single to right-center, Emma DiGiacomo-Zahller '24 had a run-scoring infield single and Kyra Killion '24 walked with the bases loaded to make it 5-0. Coe (29-5) scored once in the fourth and again in the fifth before the Pioneers shut the door, getting the final out on a popup to shortstop Amanda Ramirez '23.

Okada had two of Grinnell's six hits in the first game, a contest in which the Pioneers led 2-0 through three innings. Okada had an RBI single up the middle in the second and Sofia DiCarlo '25 ripped a run-scoring double to left-center in the third.

However, Coe scored five times in the fourth and never looked back. Kathryn Vermeulen '24 had a solid pitching performance for Grinnell and struck out three.

During the day, Mary Webb '23 moved up to seventh on Grinnell's career fielding putouts list with 355 and Durak climbed to 10th for total bases in a season with 67.

Grinnell has a big weekend approaching, beginning with a home doubleheader against Cornell College Saturday. Senior Day will be held between games.

The Pioneers then take to the road to face fellow Midwest Conference unbeaten Illinois College.
