Porter, Borberg break school records as Pioneers earn baseball split with Nebraska Wesleyan

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College players established not one, but two school records as the Pioneers salvaged a split with Nebraska Wesleyan University in baseball action Tuesday afternoon.

Luke Porter '23 became Grinnell's new king of single-season homers, bashing one in each game at Pioneer Park to boost his total to 13. That passes the previous mark of 12 set by GC Athletics Hall of Famer Mike Nodzenski.

In the second game of the twin bill, a 13-12 walkoff victory in the ninth inning, Evan Borberg '24 threw out four would-be base stealers to set a new standard at Grinnell. The previous mark had been three by many catchers.

Porter and Ethan Crawford '25 had three hits each in the second game to bolster the Pioneers' 14-hit attack. Porter's record-breaking two-run homer to left in the bottom of first inning tied the game at 2-all. It was his 19th career-round tripper, which ranks fourth in program history.

Sean Tashjian '25 and Porter each had RBI singles in the second to make it 4-4. The Prairie Wolves then jumped to a 10-4 lead before Grinnell (13-17) scored four runs in the fourth with the aid of an RBI by Nikolas Ruden '26.

Crawford belted a two-run homer in the fifth and Porter added an RBI single in the seventh, but the Pioneers still trailed 12-11 entering the bottom of the ninth. Ruden's RBI single to left scored a run to tie things up before Mac McCain '25 delivered the game-winning single.

Jakob Runkel '26 was the winning pitcher in relief.

Grinnell fell behind 9-2 in the opener before making a big comeback. McCain had an RBI single in the second inning and Josh Fournier '24 added a solo homer in the fifth. The Pioneers made things interesting in the sixth when Porter and Ruden each hit two-run homers and Cole Philpott '25 added a sacrifice fly.

Grinnell got one run in the seventh but couldn't close the gap any further as Nebraska Wesleyan (11-21) secured the win.

Cam Haaland '25 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell.

Besides his homer record, Porter also moved up to second for a season in total bases (98) and eighth in RBIs (37).

The Pioneers host Ripon College for a big Midwest Conference series this weekend.
