Grinnell baseball team uses monstrous rally to take down Red Hawks

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's baseball team rode a huge rally to topple Ripon College 11-8 in the opening game of a critical three-game set Saturday at Pioneer Park.

The Pioneers, who improved to 10-8 in the Midwest Conference and 14-17 in all games, came back from an 8-4 deficit with two runs in the sixth inning, three in the seventh and two more in the eighth.

Ian Brown '24 sparked Grinnell's 14-hit attack with three hits, while Luke Porter '23, Ethan Crawford '25, Mac McCain '25 and Josh Fournier '24 had two hits apiece. Ian Feld '25 tossed two-hit ball and struck out three over the final 2.1 innings to get the win.

Ripon shot out to a 4-0 lead before Grinnell made up some ground in the second with three runs with the aid of McCain's RBI single and an RBI from Nathan McCurdy '25.

The Red Hawks, 12-7 in the MWC and 19-14 in all games, got a run in the third and the Pioneers added one in the fourth on an RBI single by Cole Philpott '25, which made it 5-4. Ripon followed with its big fifth inning to go up 8-4.

Grinnell came back with a vengeance at that point as McCain hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Fournier a homer to make it 8-6. In the seventh, Porter hit a homer and Brown blasted a two-run shot to put Grinnell ahead 9-8.

The Pioneers got some insurance in the eighth on Porter's two-run double.

During the game, Porter added to his program-record homer total with his 14th and moved to fourth for doubles in a season with 15. His 30 career two-batters rank seventh and 82 RBIs are 10th.

The second game of the twin bill was postponed due to rain and be made up Sunday at 11 a.m., followed by the regularly-scheduled contest.
