School-record performance propels Grinnell softball team to Senior Day sweep, MWC Tourney

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's softball team celebrated Senior Day with a double-dose of good fortune Saturday in a softball sweep of Cornell College.

Not only did the Pioneers punch their ticket to the Midwest Conference Tournament, they did so in record-breaking fashion.

After rallying to win the opener against the Rams 5-3, Grinnell erupted for a school-record 19 runs in the first inning of a 20-3, five-inning victory. The first-inning run total ranks eighth in NCAA Division III history.

The wins kept Grinnell perfect in MWC play at 12-0 while moving to 23-11 overall, just one victory shy of the school record. Cornell dipped to 6-6 in the MWC and 11-19 overall.

Besides the school-record run total for an inning, Grinnell had 11 walks and five doubles in the game, both second in program history. The 20 runs are third all-time and 16 RBIs rank fourth.

Grinnell managed 12 hits in the game, including two apiece by Kambria Anson '24, Hannah Dykstra '25, Amanda Ramirez '23, Taylor Durak '24 and Samantha Chu '24. Kathryn Vermeulen '24 was the winning pitcher, striking out two over four innings.

Chu had two doubles in the first inning, knocking in two runs with each. Dykstra also had a two-run double and Durak a double that scored one run. Collecting RBI singles were Anson twice and Ramirez.

Cornell scored twice in the third before Grinnell got some insurance in the fourth on Jasmine Oda's '25 RBI double.

The first game was a nail-biter, with Grinnell scoring four runs in the sixth to rally for a 5-3 victory. The teams were tied 1-all through four innings, with Grinnell's run coming via a wild pitch.

Grinnell faced an uphill battle after the Rams scored solo runs in the fifth and sixth for a 3-1 lead. But the Pioneers stepped up in the sixth, as Ramirez belted a two-run double, Durak a sacrifice fly and Emma Nelson '23 an RBI single.

Hartman was the winning pitcher, giving up eight hits and striking out five. She now has 12 wins, second-most in a season at Grinnell. Chu ranks second in career doubles with 33, just two shy of the school record. Her 13 doubles this season rank fourth, while Durak has 33 RBIs in 2023, fifth all-time at Grinnell.

The Pioneers put their unbeaten MWC mark on the line against another league unbeaten, Illinois College, Sunday at Jacksonville, Ill.
