Grinnell baseball team bounces back from opening-game loss to claim key series with Ripon

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's baseball team responded to an opening-game loss to Ripon College Sunday in a big way, posting a 9-5 victory to take the series with the Red Hawks at Pioneer Park.

Grinnell improved to 11-9 in the Midwest Conference to remain in the hunt for the league tourney. The Pioneers are 15-19 overall.

A four-run outburst in the first inning provided Grinnell all the offense it needed in the second game. The Pioneers pounded out 11 hits in the contest, including three from Ian Brown '24.

Luke Porter '23 and Brown hit RBI singles in the first and Ethan Crawford '25 belted a two-run homer to left. Ripon, 13-8 in the MWC and 20-15 overall, scored solo runs in the second through fourth innings to pull within a run, but then the Pioneers struck for four runs in the bottom of the fourth as Nikolas Ruden '26 belted a three-run homer to right and Brown a solo shot to left-center.

Grinnell finished off its scoring in the sixth when Porter plated a run on a groundout.

Simon Lane '23, the second of five Grinnell pitchers, got the win by tossing hitless ball and striking out one in 2.1 innings.

Ripon scored six runs in the first inning of the opener and seven in the third on its way to a 22-7 win. Grinnell scored once in the first inning on Crawford's RBI single and Cole Philpott '25 blasted a grand-slam homer to left in the second to make it 6-5.

The Pioneers' final two runs came in the seventh on Crawford's two-run homer to center. Daniel Shaul '26 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell.

During the games, Porter tied the school record for total bases in a season with 108 and moved to third for doubles with 16 and fifth for RBIs with 42.

Grinnell hosts the University of Chicago for a solo game at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
