Grinnell softball team ties school records for MWC, overall wins while remaining in contention for title

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - With a week to go in the season, Grinnell College's softball team remains in contention to earn a share of its first Midwest Conference title in program history.

That happened when the Pioneers defeated Illinois College 5-1 in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon. Grinnell tied school records for both conference and overall victories for a season by improving to 13-1 in the MWC and 24-12 overall. The Pioneers finish off the regular season Saturday with two games at Ripon College.

Illinois College won the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader 6-0 to earn at least a share of the MWC title. Illinois College, which has completed MWC play with a 15-1 record while improving to 23-12-1 overall, will host the league tourney because it owns the tie-breaker over Grinnell (fewest runs allowed per conference game).

Grinnell trailed the second game 1-0 before Taylor Durak '24 gave the Pioneers the lead for good with one swing of the bat, a two-run homer to left in the fifth inning. The Pioneers added some insurance in the seventh as Amanda Ramirez '23 and Durak had RBI infield singles and Alexa Okada '24 walked with the bases loaded.

Kathryn Vermeulen '24 was sharp in the pitching circle, throwing a complete-game five-hitter and striking out six.

The opener was scoreless until the Lady Blues plated two runs in the third inning. They added another two in the fourth and fifth innings. Christin Hartman '24 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell.

Ramirez now ranks fourth in career triples at Grinnell with eight and fifth in runs scored with 76. Okada is fifth all-time in walks with 43.

On the season list, Durak ranks third in home runs with seven and fourth for RBIs (36) and walks (19). Kambria Anson '24 stole her 15th base of the season, fourth all-time.
