Pair of school records provide silver lining to GC baseball loss against Chicago

GRINNELL, Iowa - A pair of school records took a bit of the sting out of seeing the University of Chicago rally in the final innings to post a 12-7 baseball win over Grinnell College Tuesday at Pioneer Park.

Luke Porter '23 belted a homer to boost his season total base figure to 112, taking over the top spot from GC Athletics Hall of Famer Mike Nodzenski. Nodzenski had 108 total bases in 2011. Porter moved his career RBI total to 85, eighth all-time at Grinnell, and his 499 putouts in the field make him ninth all-time.

Additionally, Grinnell belted four homers to move its season total to 46, three in front of the previous school mark of 43 set in 2010.

Grinnell broke out to a 2-0 lead as Cole Philpott '25 hit a solo homer to left in the first inning and Josh Fournier '24 lifted a sacrifice fly to center in the second. The teams traded runs in the fourth inning, with Fournier nailing a solo homer to left for a 3-1 edge.

Grinnell tacked on three runs in the fifth on Sean Tashjian's '25 two-run homer to right and Porter's solo shot to center. In the sixth, Grinnell pushed its lead to 7-2 on Tashjian's RBI single.

However, Chicago scored twice in the eighth inning and put up eight runs in the ninth to secure the win.

Both Grinnell (11-10 Midwest Conference, 15-19 overall) and Chicago (12-8 MWC, 21-15) remain in the hunt for the league's postseason tournament. Grinnell ends its regular season this weekend with three games against Knox College.
