School record highlights offensive outburst in Grinnell baseball sweep of Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. - With the aid of a school-record performance, Grinnell College's offense erupted in a key baseball doubleheader sweep of Monmouth College Saturday.

Luke Porter '23 tied a Grinnell record by blasting three homers in a 12-7 victory in the opener, and added a second round-tripper in the next game as the Pioneers came away with an 11-1, eight-inning victory.

Porter finished with four homers on the day, and the Pioneers had seven as a team in the twin bill. Porter's single-game record tied him with four other players and had occurred most recently in 2015. He also had 12 total bases in the game, second-best at Grinnell.

Grinnell's three-game sweep of the Fighting Scots is the Pioneers' first sweep of a foe since doing the same to Monmouth last year.

Grinnell (9-12, 6-4 Midwest Conference) pounded out 11 hits in the opener, with Porter getting three and Ethan Crawford '25 and Michael Flaherty '25 two apiece.

Grinnell went up 3-0 in the third inning on Mac McCain's '25 solo homer and Porter's two-run shot. Monmouth (7-14, 3-7 MWC) rallied for a 4-3 lead before each team scratched out a run in the fifth, Grinnell's on Porter's solo homer.

The Pioneers went ahead to stay in the sixth with a five-run outburst. An error allowed one run to score, Sean Richardson '24 and Porter drew bases-loaded walks and Crawford bashed a two-run single.

Grinnell got a run in the eighth on Porter's homer and added two more in the ninth when Flaherty hit an RBI double and Sean Tashjian '25 a run-scoring single.

Augie Ros '25, the fourth of six Grinnell pitchers, earned the win.

Grinnell stole seven bases in the second game, which ranks seventh in program history. Tashjian, Josh Fournier '24 and Evan Borberg '24 each had two hits for Grinnell and Cam Haaland '25 earned the pitching win in relief, striking out two and scattering three hits in three innings.

The Pioneers fell behind 1-0 before Borberg's RBI single in the fourth tied the game. Tashjian had a solo homer and Fournier an RBI single in the fifth and Porter blasted a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 5-1.

Tashjian tacked on a grand slam homer in the seventh, a frame that also included a run plated by a wild pitch. An error in the eighth accounted for Grinnell's final run.

Grinnell is back in action Thursday when Cornell College visits Pioneer Park. The first pitch is slated for 1 p.m. as the teams resume a game suspended earlier this season. That will be followed by another game at approximately 3 p.m.
