Grinnell baseball team to resume MWC Tourney Saturday after rain-suspended contest against Ripon

BELOIT, Wis. - Grinnell College has survived to battle for another day at the 2023 Midwest Conference Baseball Tournament.

After losing to tourney host Beloit College 17-2 in the opening round of the double-elimination event Friday, Grinnell trailed Ripon College 5-1 in an elimination game before action was suspended due to rain. The teams will resume action at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Nathan McCurdyThe day began on a good note when Grinnell's Nathan McCurdy '25 (inset) was presented the Elite 20 Award, which recognizes the student-athlete with the highest GPA participating in that sport's championship or tournament event.  The award recognizes the commitment of the student-athlete toward the pursuit of excellence in both the athletic and academic realms. A student-athlete may only receive the award one during any given academic year.

Sean Tashjian '25 blasted a solo homer to right field to open the scoring against Beloit. The hosts put up two runs in the second, third and fourth innings before going for 11 in the sixth.

Mac McCain '25 scored on a balk in the seventh inning for Grinnell (18-20) before the Buccaneers secured the win.

Jake Hull '24 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell, striking out two in 3.1 innings of work.

The second game was entering the bottom of the ninth inning before action was halted.
