School-record, other big performances propel Grinnell on opening day of MWC Championships

GRINNELL, Iowa - With a school record and plenty of entries onto the program's all-time top 10 list, Grinnell College's women's track and field team enjoyed a big showing on the opening day of the Midwest Conference Outdoor Championships.


Eva Carchidi '24 sprinted to a new school record in the 100-meter dash prelims Friday at the Darren Young '93 Track and Field Complex, establishing the top qualifying time of 12.32 seconds. That nipped the school mark of 12.37 set by Lisa Meeden in 1982.

Grinnell got the meet off to a great start, taking four of the top eight places in the 10,000. Keely Miyamoto '26 was third in 40:27.36, Mira Diamond-Berman '25 was fourth in 40:45.69, Emma Schaefer '23 placed fifth in 41:02.18 and Diana Barba '26 placed eighth in 42:35.27.

Hannah Roark '26 ran the 10th-best time in program history in the 1500, placing third in 4:53.82. Morgan Karow '26 was fifth in 4:54.98 and Crystal Kaczmarczyk '25 was eighth in 5:01.05.

Aiyana Rockwell '24 took runner-up honors in the discus with a toss of 41.83 meters, a personal record. Annie Filkins '24 was fifth in the event at 38.12 meters, which ranks seventh in Pioneer history.

Isa Voinescu '26 placed seventh in the javelin at 31.45 meters, which ranks sixth in program history. Also, Maddy Strovers '26 recorded the sixth-best hammer performance at Grinnell with a throw of 36.21 meters.

Carchidi posted the third-best 200 clocking in program history while going 26.00 in the prelims, the fourth-best qualifying time. Sonia Edassery '24 qualified sixth in 26.24 and third in the 400 in 59.33, which ranks fifth in GC history.

Sadie Staker '24 qualified for the finals in both the 400 hurdles (fourth-best prelim time of 1:04.48) and 100 hurdles (sixth-best of 17.08).

Grinnell is fourth in the team standings with 41 points. Ripon College leads the pack at 86.

Due to forecasted inclement weather, Saturday's action for both running and field events will begin at 9 a.m.
