GC baseball team punches ticket to MWC Tourney for first time since 2018 with sweep of Knox

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's baseball team punched its ticket to the Midwest Conference Tournament for the first time since 2018 with a Senior Day sweep of Knox College Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Park.

Grinnell took care of business in its home finale, winning the opener 5-2 and the second game 9-4 to improve to 13-10 in the MWC and 17-19 overall. That guaranteed the Pioneers the fourth seed in the tourney.

Pioneer pitchers struck out 17 batters in the second game, second-most in program history. Catcher Ethan Crawford's '26 fielding chances total of 18 ranks 10th all-time.

Starting pitcher Daniel Shaul '26 struck out the side in each of his two innings, and winning pitcher Matthew Nakamoto '26 fanned 10 batters in five innings. Closer Evan Borberg '24 struck out two batters in the final inning.

Grinnell trailed 2-0 before scoring three times in the third as Sean Tashjian '25 had a two-run single and Nikolas Ruden '26 added an RBI single. Knox went up 4-3 in the fourth before the Pioneers tied it in the fifth on Ruden's RBI dingle. Grinnell went ahead to stay in the sixth on RBI singles by Cole Philpott '25 and Tashjian.

Mac McCain '25 had a run-scoring triple in the seventh and Luke Porter '23 added to his season school-record homer total with a two-run blast in the eighth. Porter has 22 round-trippers in his career, third all-time at Grinnell.

Grinnell got out to a 4-0 lead in the opener and closed the door from there. Ian Brown '24 and McCain had RBI doubles in the second inning and Lucas Hadding '24 a single that plated another run. Grinnell got another run in the fourth and yet another in the eighth on Ruden's RBI single.

Knox, 1-22 in the MWC and 7-31 overall, scored its two runs in the sixth inning.

Grinnell starter Jake Hull '24 got the win, striking out five in five innings. Ian Feld '25 worked a scoreless ninth and struck out two in the ninth inning to earn the save.

The Pioneers finish the regular season Sunday with a single game at Knox.
