Explosive 2nd-half propels Grinnell football team to come-from-behind win over Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. - At halftime of Saturday's game, Grinnell College's football team found itself on the wrong end of the scoreboard by an 11-point gap.

But rather than see its losing streak grow to eight, the Pioneers responded in glorious fashion and rallied for a 33-23 victory over Beloit College in Midwest Conference play.

Grinnell's 27-point outburst in the second half was the most for the team in a half since scoring 27 in a victory over Trinity Bible College on Sept. 8, 2018. The win was Grinnell's first since Oct. 1 of last year, which also came against Beloit, and the point total of 33 was the most for the team since scoring 40 against Beloit on Oct. 2, 2021.

Grinnell improved to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the MWC while stretching its winning streak against the Buccaneers to four games. Beloit dipped to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the league.

Garrett Wilson '25 set a program record for highest average yards per pass reception with a 39.0-yard average, breaking the previous best of 37.3 yards by Robert Seer in 2009. An 81-yard pass connection between Grayson Woodhouse '24 and Wilson ranks as seventh-longest in program history.

Woodhouse completed 14-of-22 passes for a career-high 238 yards and one touchdown. His 201 career completions and 2,319 passing yards both rank 12th in program history. Woodhouse has 2,620 yards of total offense in his career, which ranks 13th.

Wilson had three receptions for a career-high 117 yards, and Nick Rhinehart '25 added 71 yards on two snags. Woodhouse and CJ Readon '27 had 67 and 65 yards of rushing, respectively.

Bert Greene '27 and Hugh Werner '25 each had 14 tackles, while Greyson Blanchard '26, TJ Lawrence '25 and Luke Walters '26 had eight stops apiece. Lawrence had 2.5 sacks for 14 yards.

Beloit opened the scoring, but Grinnell answered with a nine-play, 87-yard drive that included a 44-yard run by Woodhouse and was capped by Woodhouse's 6-yard TD pass to Readon. The extra point was no good, and the hosts scored 10 points in the second quarter for a 17-6 halftime lead.

Grinnell's first drive of the second half ended with a missed field goal, but the Pioneers began their next drive in Beloit territory and needed just three plays to score as Noah Smith '27 hit Rhinehart with a 31-yard score. The two-pointer was no good, leaving the score at 17-12.

Another three-play drive put Grinnell ahead to stay, as Woodhouse hit Wilson with a 14-yard pass, added a 40-yarder to Rhinehart and then ran in from 6 yards out for the score. Woodhouse ran for the two-pointer to make it 20-17.

Woodhouse rushed in from a yard out to push the lead to 26-17. A pair of Beloit field goals brought the hosts within 26-23 before the Pioneer defense stopped a Buccaneer drive deep in their own territory. It took Grinnell two plays to go 8 yards, with Danny Quirk '25 rushing in from 5 yards out for the score. Rhinehart's kick accounted for the final score.

Grinnell has next weekend off before hosting Lawrence University at 1 p.m. Sept. 30 at Rosenbloom Field.
