Grinnell punches non-conference victory over Fontbonne with key 2nd-half goal

GRINNELL, Iowa - After being winless in its previous four outings, the Grinnell College men's soccer team was more than hungry for victory.

Grinnell fed its appetite Sunday afternoon, as Ezra Gould's '27 first career collegiate goal propelled the Pioneers to a 1-0 victory over Fontbonne University at Springer Field.

Carter Benson '24 and Jayson Kunkel '26 combined on the shutout at keeper for Grinnell, each working 45 minutes. It marked Grinnell's third shutout of the season.

Grinnell (3-2-2) dominated the shots battle 20-8, including an 8-3 edge in the first half. Still, the teams were scoreless at intermission.

That all changed 15 minutes into the second stanza when Gould found the back of the net. On the play, Gould played a bouncing ball outside the box and to the right. He lofted a perfect shot into the upper left part of the net past a diving goal keeper for the score.

Grinnell held Fontbonne (1-2-1) at bay the rest of the way to secure the win.

Demi Oni '27 led Grinnell's balanced shot attack with four, while Jaxon Willoughby '26 added three shots. Anthony Hong '27, Oliver Northing '25 and Sam Bayliss '24 had two shots each.

Both Kunkel and Bayliss had one save apiece.

Grinnell opens Midwest Conference play Saturday at Lake Forest College in a rematch of last year's league tournament title match.
