GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's volleyball team was prepared not only for Tuesday night's match against Buena Vista University, but for the aftermath, as well.
The Pioneers swept away the Beavers in quick fashion at Darby Gymnasium, and then the players quickly changed into commemorative t-shirts to mark the significance of the win – coach
Eric Ragan's 100
th career victory.
Set scores, in favor of the 4-1 Pioneers, were 25-12, 25-23 and 25-11. Buena Vista fell to 2-3 with the loss.
Grinnell hit a season-best .358, with
Keira Sullivan '27 collecting 12 kills and hitting .417.
Jenna Keller '24 added seven kills and hit .353, while
Millie Leonard '27 smoked down six kills on seven swings and hit .714.
The one-two setting punch of
Kylie-Ann Smith '27 and
Emily Brewer '24 had 15 and 12 assists, respectively. Keller,
Sophie Weber '25 and Leonard all had two aces and
Kylie Snell '27 contributed three blocks. In the digs department, Keller had 13 and Weber 12.
The Pioneers bolted out to a 7-3 lead in the first set before Keller went on a huge service run that stretched the margin to 15-3. The second set was tight throughout, with the teams tied at 20-all before Beaver service and attack errors put Grinnell up 22-20. The Pioneers led the rest of the set, securing the victory on Sullivan's kill.
Grinnell shot out to a 6-0 lead in the third set and cruised from there, finishing off the win on Leonard's serve.
The Pioneers are in St. Paul, Minn., this weekend for the Macalester College Tournament.
